Channeling my inner Shakespeare on what he would most certainly call a summer's day here in Connecticut: 20+ and sunny. I wish I brought some shorts with me for spring break.

As the informed reader will know, it is election year and season of the primary here in the U.S. and A. As my main man, Barack Obamadeus (borrowed that one from Munroe: XKCD), is currently stationed in the White House, he does not need to prove himself in a primary election this year. This amuses me, myself and political bloggers, reporters and informed people across the nation as there is nothing more entertaining than watching 4 old white men self-destruct through a series of debates, TV ads and interviews/press conferences. The 30-second run-down on the candidates, brought to you in part by Statens Lånekasse:

Newt Gingrich: this former Speaker of the House is one angry son of a bitch. He is famous, among other things, for having an affair with his then third wife to be while publicly berating President Clinton for having an affair with Monica Lewinsky. He is also willing to grant statehood to the moon, provided that 10,000 Americans live there. That's like flipping a huge middle finger at Washington, D.C. Moreover, Gingrich has proved unwilling to reason in debates and he comes off as a spoiled brat in terms of how he conducts himself in response to criticism.

Ron Paul: the self-proclaimed libertarian in the race, and someone who bears a resemblance to Gollum, mr. Paul has envisioned a highly protectionist policy for the United States should he be elected. He even talked about "building a wall around America", for some reason. While his protectionism-babble is the stuff of crazy people, Paul actually has some good, moderate ideas on his mind and he is not to idiotically conservative on social issues like some of the other candidates.

Rick Santorum: speaking of idiotically conservative, Santy baby! This devout conservative catholic has publicly stated that rape-babies are a blessing, on par with his anti-abortion campaign. However, he is also anti-contraception. He believes, per the bible (although I do not know where it says), that man and woman should not lay until married. Noble stance, and one that I can easily respect. The problem is, he should not be the one deciding this for people. But then again, he is not. In a country that prides itself on the separation of state and church, and has explicitly stated so in its constitution (the most sacred document to most Americans), mr. Santorum believes that Americans should answer to god when it comes to political decisions. Not only does this go against the constitution, but it also go against any form of reasoning: as soon as you involve your religion into politics, you are not making decisions based on rationale, logic or sanity any more. And that can be dangerous to a country. (I would have a religious discussion, but I just don't feel like it. It alienates people, makes them angry at me and ends with me getting angry and using bad words). This is all coming from a guy who has a JD and an MBA...you would think that smart people would be smarter.

Mitt Romney: the flip-flop master, former governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a rich motherfucker, mr. Romney is perceived as the candidate that can take the most votes from Obama in a general election. The problem: he does not resonate well with Republicans. More problems: mr. Romney is one rich asshole. With a networth of around $250 million and a taxable income in 2011 of about $42 million, he does not exactly appeal to the blue-collar workers he so desperately wants. In recent weeks, he has stated that the auto industry is important to him personally because his wife drives "a couple Cadillacs" (paraphrased), and that he is not a huge fan of NASCAR but some of his "close friends are team owners". Not exactly something that is fathomable to the 99%.

If you want my advice, Obama is going to win the general election in November. The alternatives are ghastly, and frankly, they act stupid. As I have not visited the bible-belt I cannot say what the feel is for any of these four outside of the North-East. But it seems that Republicans are longing for the days of H.W. and McCain, just as much as I am.

It's been four weeks since the Super Bowl, and I'm still not over it. For someone who reads ESPN.com several times a day it's been quite a transformation not looking at that website at all.

Nuvel. The weather in Boston is equally messed up compared to Trondheim. We have snow and 10-15 degree days inbetween each other. Confusing as hell.

Since I do not have a written will and testament laying around, let it be known to the three of you that from time to time visit this blog that if anyone tries to have themselves baptized on my behalf posthumously the remainder of my estate will go to the first person who rips one of their eyes out.

I'm not kidding. I think the mormon practice of baptizing someone after they have died is absolutely horrendous. It is disgusting and a misuse of religious freedom. While I may no longer observe the practices of any particular religion, I was once baptized by my parents before I could voice my own opinion on the matter. I don't see any problem with that: if it really bothers you just leave your church later in life. But after I'm gone? Hell no (pun intended).

The only thing people I leave behind are allowed to do is walk up to my grave on my birthday and share a shot with me of my finest single malt scotch. Honor the dead the way they lived.

Before I start, I'm sorry for the profanity in the headline. But right now, there is really not much else to say. The Patriots had the game, with a drive starting inside their own 10 with around 9 minutes to play. The problem with this drive is that it took around 5 minutes off the clock, but it only get them to the 50 or so. This left around 4 minutes for the Giants offense to drive down and score (and on the scoring play, the Patriots let Bradshaw walk in. Great moment in coaching, but not great enough).

I can probably write 4 pages on what actually happened in the fourth quarter, but right now, I really do not want to. Both teams were deserving of a win. Brady threw an ill-timed interception, and the Giants recovered two of their fumbles. These are the ways football is, and these are the reasons we love the game. Right now though, I am at the absolute low. This was the Patriots game to win. No one can argue against that. No one with a slight hint of football IQ can say they played a worse game than the Giants. Giants had a few lucky bounces, and better execution during the last 9 minutes. The Patriots drop to many passes and throws too many interceptions. End of story.

Super Bowl weekend

We have finally reached the end of the 2011-2012 NFL season, and it is a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, New York vs. New England. Played in the house that Peyton built. Nearly two weeks ago the Patriots were favored by 3.5 points and the over lay at a cool 55.5. Since then, lot of money on New York to move both lines a full point down. As of 4.45pm ET it is New England -2.5 and o/u 54.5.

New England have not lost since week 9, coincidentally to New York, in Foxborough. New York, on the other hand, have won 5 straight, basically elimination games. Their last loss was an ugly stinker of a game in which they lost by double digits to the Washington Redskins.

A lot has been said, written and yelled about the awful nature of New Englands defense: ranked 31st in yards given. New York only slightly better, at 27th, giving up 35 yards fewer per game. However, this is the shittiest use of stats to rank a football team. Points scored vs. points given are the only two things that matter. If we use those numbers, the tale is a little bit different: New England gave up just over three touchdowns per game, at 21.4 points. New York let opponents score an even 25 points a game.

Am I writing this to make myself feel better? Bet your balls I am! I have been watching/reading ESPN all week and I am super nervous for this game. I mean, frightened. It is awful.

On offense, the disparity is even greater. I'm not even going to talk about the yards there, just points. New York averaged 24.6 points per game. Wait a minute...New York, on average, lost every game this season by 0.4 points? They had negative scoring this season? New England on the other hand, scored a hefty 32.1 points per game, good for 3rd in the league, trailing only the record-setting Drew BreesOrleans and the Green Bay Doublechecks. Another paragraph just to calm myself? Fuck yeah.

For all the talk about Tom Brady's passing skills, this game is going to come down to New England's ability to run the ball against the Giants' D. Put Brady in the shotgun, 4 wide with Law Firm on his side and run draws until the linebackers creep up and they are forced to put someone bigger in the middle than one of their talented and fast pass rushers. My point is, I see this as a close game that is going to come down to who can run the ball, and who can get a good game from their special teams. Field position is going to be key. Moreso than ever.

Since I do not gamble on Patriots games, I have called upon my personal panel of experts to predict the game for you. I am still missing a fair portion of the picks I requested, however, I will give you what I have. Because you're worth it.

Stafford is good, Megatron is a beast...and that's really all you can say about these Lions. Shootout warning, but I think the Saints are going to make the Lions chase them all day, and with the skill players at Brees' disposal, even the mighty Megatron will fall short. I'm not crazy about this pick because we all saw what happened last year when Marshawn Lynch went Beastmode on the Saints. And 11 points is a mother and a half in terms of spreads. I'm still debating whether this is the right choice, and I probably will be doubting myself until the game ends. I did hit the over on this one, even at a solid 59 points. Straight up I think the Saints take it, but the extra point here allows me to go Lions where they can cover even if they are losing by ten.

I just finished watching Love Actually. It has become the one Christmas tradition that I never go without. I always watch it on December 23rd, come hell or high water. Before tonight, the last time I watched Love Actually was also the last time I saw my grandmother fully functional. As most of you know, she suffered a stroke on the 24th of December last year and never recovered. And as luck would have it, I found it parked outside my favorite bar.

I toyed around with the title of this post for quite some time. One I thought about using was "Come back baby, rock and roll never forgets." Another one was "Turning mountains into oceans, putting people on the moon", which is very close to what I feel the Drive-By Truckers did tonight.

The House of Blues is an establishment in itself. And for me, to experience the Truckers there the first time I enter, it is a feeling I cannot describe. Right from the get go with "Used to be a cop" and "Three dimes down", Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood show why they are the songwriters they are, and not to forget, why they play such good guitar.

This is the second time I've seen DBT. First time was out in the sticks, in Norway, back in 2008. This time around, their show was more rock'n'roll. Way more. We were treated to heavy guitar riffs, solos and drumming, we got to see singing from Mike and Patterson almost 50/50 (the lovely Shonna Tucker treated us to a few tunes, including the absolutely gorgeous cover of "Where's Eddie". If you have not heard their rendition of this song yet, I strongly advice you too, regardless of your musical preferences. It is simply a masterpiece of a song), and we got a decent number of encore songs.

It was good to see they guys play a lot of stuff from "...Opera" and "Dirty South", and I was obviously ecstatic when "Zip City" came on for the encore. But it was also a pleasant surprise to hear "Women without whiskey" and "Where the Devil won't stay", not to mention "The fourth night of my drinking". Such was the show that I am having a hard time picking high points.

Bottom line is, if you are a rock and roll fan, and you have not seen the Drive-By Truckers perform yet, you have missed out. Some might say they play country music, some might say they are boring. To those people, I say fuck you. DBT are one of the few bands that stay honest to the medium, they perform like it's the last show they will ever play, and their song repertoire is unprecedented. Songwriting like no-one else.

I did want to hear "Dead, drunk, and naked" and "Assholes", but with that much good stuff from "...Opera" and "Dirty South", not to mention the stuff they played off "Go-go Boots", I really can't complain. Well worth the money, and I hope it's not three years till next time.

PS: I had Denver +4.5 tonight.

This is post #400 here at Zip City. It's been 3 years and approximately 3,5 months since I first pretended I could be a blogger on the world wide web. A lot has changed in my life since then, but this has been one of the things that I have kept with me at all times: my own, my retreat. I can't say that I have been highly political, highly relevant or highly entertaining. But for me that does not matter. If you want to read what I post you read. If you don't then find yourself a different blog. Simple, easy logic.

In other news, great time with everyone down in Philadelphia, but a special shout to Billy and Roggz who made the trip to Boston and spent a few days here. Even though the Pats lost, it was a lot of fun hanging out with you and going to the game.

Now tonight we have Oregon-Stanford in about 2 hours. Should be a great game; I like Oregon, and I like watching Andrew Luck. 4 vs 7.

I don't know what I should say today. When I got home I was upbeat and in a very good mood. Right now, it feels shallow and broken. And I'm really not sure what the difference is. This is the part where I usually say 'fuck it', but I'm older now, I should have the core established, the requirements fulfilled, the dreams chased. The glass is always half-full, except when some asshole drank the fucker. It seems that he is drinking more than can be expected. Or maybe I'm just having an awful hour right now. I really can't tell. I guess adjusting to real life is more than an exercise. Here's to hoping I didn't realize too late.

That is, if you don't count the absolute spectacular firework of a concert put on tonight by the Australian Pink Floyd Show. In an old-school theatre packed to the brim, the Aussies put on a show for almost 2 and a half hours, playing a wide variety of Floyd favorites, and even an older, banned Syd Barrett song. Very encouraging to see so many young people at such a small venue.

Most of you know that I went to see Roger Waters in Hartford last fall. While his show was more gargantuan, more epic, grandeur and generally an awe-inspiring performance, the Aussie crew is not something to be embarrassed about. The vocals are the biggest difference, but it really doesn't bother you at all cause you get so many different songs and so much good guitar and bass play that the hairs on the back of your neck start rising. Coupled with the circular video screen and one of the best light designs I have ever seen at a rock concert, you have a very true and worthy tribute.

Highlights include 'What do you want from me' from Division Bell; the band majestically close out the show with a power-performance of 'Run like hell' as their one and only encore (they did 'Comfortably numb' right before). But my absolute favorite of the night was 'The great gig in the sky' when they took one of their three magnificent backup-singers (all ladies) and she belted out one of the best vocal performances I have ever witnessed. Seriously, I will die a happy man because I got to see, hear and feel her rendition of, in this fans opinion, one of the underrated songs of not just Dark Side...but of the entire Pink Floyd repertoire.

With grace they steadily move forward, towards their goal. Not everyone notices the sleek, silver-grey body. Leather seats. Free wi-fi. 20 degrees centigrade on the A/C. For $14 this is not a bad way to travel. Especially when it is only 2 hours. Quite comfortable.

A man walks in to a bar, sits down, orders a brew. I say what's up. He salutes me in common dude-ish fashion, and we banter. He asks me where I'm from. I say Norway. He says 'Me too!' Or he's half Irish or half Italian or half Turkish or half Jupiter. Whatever. Point is, talk to any white American male, and they will tell you where they are from. Anywhere but America itself.

White Americans (especially males) have a tendency, a need almost, to be from somewhere else than actually the US. Is this a pride thing? Perhaps. I have a different theory. It might be that they give away these hints at heritage, because they want to seem more diverse. As in that will help them forget the transgressions against the African-American and natives. As in that they are still proud to be American, but they long for something else to hold on to. It's not easy to explain, it's something that is best experienced. If you've lived with them, you would know.

Went to an ANSA event on Thursday; bowling, drinks and foot at Jillian's next to Fenway. Needless to say, I won the bowling with an average of 142 over two rounds. Not great, but not ghastly. After that, we had one drink at Landsdowne (which is conveniently located right around the corner from Jillian's) before we headed up to Hipster Heaven on Central Square (the place is called People's Republic, they have PBR and MHL bottles and they only accept cash. Yeah). I met some good interesting Norwegians, so I guess I'm not alone in this town. Having located an apartment earlier that day, I was pretty excited. I will try and post some pictures from the place, but needless to say, it is MUCH nicer than Walnut. And much bigger. It's pretty sweet.

A highly interesting comment made by Bob Woodward in the current issue of FP. In fifty years time, what will American history books say? "The ongoing war on terror?" "How the war on terror was won?" My personal favorite: "America overreacts to 9/11." Quite a bold statement to make, and definitely one that will make most conservatives choke on their Thursday night T-Bone steak.

But if you look at the ten years past, and what has happened, how not only the international situation has changed, but also the domestic one, it is quite possible that some 12 year old kid will read that as a headline when he opens up his American History textbook to page 306.

Think about it. Bush reads My Pet Goat. "Our nation is under attack." Obviously, you go after Al-Qaeda. If that initial operation had been executed with a bit more precision and more reliance on the eyes and ears of counter terrorists on the ground, the brass of Taliban and Al-Qaeda could have been taken down within 6 months.

Instead, you put yourself in a deep shit hole for the next ten years, and, because of all the detainees, you start with enhanced interrogation. As witnessed and told by several key CIA members, some subjects would reveal exactly what the interrogators wanted to hear, just to stop the torture. This is evident in the lead-up to the Iraq war, when several prisoners actually claimed to know of WMDs, just to have the sadistic treatment stop.

So now you're stuck in another, deeper shit hole. But this time, it soon becomes clear, there is no real reason for you to be there. This is happening in Bush's first term as president, ohbytheway.

He handled 9/11 pretty well. He handled the aftermath horribly. And this is where the overreaction comes in. Every attempted attack on US soil after 9/11 has been thwarted. If done properly, the Americans could have been in and out of Afghanistan in less than five years (that is not an opinion, but based on an analysis done by several government officials, including high-knowledge and high-ranking CIA operatives). Instead, you go after Saddam, you do not impose war-tax at home and you get your country in to the biggest economic clusterfuck ever.

And I haven't even mentioned the cost of human lives and casualties - not just American. NATO allies, non-NATO allies and Iraqi/Afghan lives have been lost by the thousands. Very many thousands. How is all this justifiable?

I think you are right Bob. America did overreact to 9/11. And the person responsible was not paying any attention while he drove her off the highway.

Time has come upon us

As most of you know, I am now residing in a different part of this country (although residing might not be entirely accurate since I have yet to procure a permanent address), even though I'm only 2 hours away from my previous location. The last week was spent paratrooping (not to the full extent of the term, relax) through older stomping grounds, but as of tomorrow, I have no idea where I will be spending my nights.

Regardless of this, we are about to start another season of exciting, hard-hitting and frustrating football. The college games are already underway, and the NFL kicks off on Thursday night. The two things that really make me enjoy this job are the feeling of achievement and the elitism that comes with such a small profession.

Achievement: the work is demanding both physically and mentally. It is heavy, you have to maneuver around in cramped spaces and use all parts of your body to lift, stabilize and secure both yourself and the item your are hanging. You have to maintain focus. If you fuck up, best case scenario it's a dropped bolt and a lot of yelling. Worst case scenario you ruin equipment for thousands of dollars, kill someone and will never get hired again.

The elitism might be more personal, but it's as if this fraternity (there are a few girls as well) of riggers tend to be very exclusive, very good at what they do (I'm not saying I'm the best, but I know what I'm doing), very protective...and also very hostile. Not hostile in a violent way but, hostile in the sense that once you don that harness, you are free from any other duties than rigging. No one can ask you to go push a case of MAC 2000s off stage. No one will ask you. It's as if that one profession, that small part of a crew is on it's own shelf, not mingling with the humps.

I try not to brag about anything in my life. But when people do ask me what I do, I feel a sense of pride in conveying the fact that I work as a rigger. It's a dangerous job, PPE and all that. It's complicated in that you have to think of so many things at the same time. It's not for everyone. And for that, I'm glad.

For all practical purposes, and despite the fact that he was a mass-murdering religious fanatic (religious fanatics are always the worst. Hipster come in at a close #2 and conservative republicans round out the Top 3), Osama Bin Laden was helpfull to the United States. As long as he was out there, it was very easy to justify being at war. He represented some token, almost like a golden nugget, for the military, and the government, to look for.

No doubt his assasination is significant: it provides some sort of closure or sense of justice for millions of Americans. It is going to weaken Al-Qaeda over time. But it also brings forth the possibility of severe retaliation and revenge from radical elements, and these should not be underestimated. Attacks are likely to be concentrated against American targets, though intel shows that several western European nations are also possible destinations for destruction.

By the power of my education and interests, I should comment on Libya, Yemen, all the unrest down there, and the budget problems in America. But today we are talking about Datalagringsdirektivet. I'm not gonna get into the details of the document itself, but it provides the government, or any agency under their control, with the opportunity to collect and store information about ordinary people's use and habits concerning computers and phones.

From a democratic perspective it looks like a blatant violation of the right to privacy. The government can track all your movements online and through this they can access the information should you be under investigation on charges of say, terrorism. The pretense here is that this will improve national security, and from a realistic standpoint this might very well be the case. However, by implementing directives such as this, they are practically removing layers of security from our everyday lives. The good $100 once said: "Those who choose security over freedom deserves neither." I believe our government is in violation of that.

Okay, my pulse is slower and my head is clearer. Although the task at hand tomorrow is kinda fucking difficult.

As a little treat to you, and to myself in the midst of exam-week at Eastern, I have some random stuff, my record updated for week 13 and my regular Thursday night pick.

The Town of Cobalt. Cobalt. Why would you name a town Cobalt unless it's a mining (cobalt is mined, right?) town? I mean, not exactly an exotic or inviting name such as San Antonio or Seattle or Mystic or Baltimore. And yeah, cobalt is mined, but mostly through extraction of other minerals.

There is something seriously wrong with something right now, but I'm not sure what it is. Might be the lack of sleep.

Not upholding the groomin' standards, that's for sure.

I think in week thirteen I went 11-4, which is a new season best. This puts my overall record at 81-83-3. You'll get everything from last week when I post my regular picks on Friday or Saturday.

Sublime is my mood-changer of the day. Why is it so god-damned hard to focus when the end is so near I can smell the sweet of the victory-champagne, the fresh leaves of the crown and the smoke of my 4am scotch? I finally managed to do laundry today, only 2 days late, and I'm actually making some progress on my paper. Now just need someone to revise my expansionist thesis and I'm back in business. Let's see if I can keep it up throughout the night, I'm expecting nothing earlier than a 2am tonight either.

But I'm happy for all of you :)

Warrior round-up

After looking back at the season, here are some things that will be remembered, in list form, in no particular order:

-Drawing a holding penalty on my first defensive play of the year
-Stopped a 2pt-conversion
-Tackles for loss in two different games
-Defensive captain against Southwestern
-Calling the alone for 2 games, and calling plays in the huddle
-Having a blitz called dabble
-Making the umpire laugh pre-snap
-Waiting for the play clock to wind down to call a timeout while standing next to the referee, just like the pros do
-Actually getting a sideline chant going at a halftime
-Getting a W in the worst game I've ever played, but probably the best game called as D coordinator
-Pass-blocking beastly as a tight end

And basically, everything that I'm forgetting, the friendships made, the jokes shared, the respect from teammates and the feeling of being an important part of a rag-tag team, despite horribly unimpressive stats for a linebacker.

One can say quite a few things about music in the 21st century. Lady Gaga is playing in Oslo this weekend. There is a popular tune these days called "Shots" (the alcohol kind). People who have done absolutely nothing for the advancement of anything except the sale of diamonds and Escalades are making millions of hard currency.

Tonight, I have the pleasure of reporting that all hope is not lost.

The Wall is every bit as majestic, dynamic, driving, political (and politically incorrect) in 2010 as it was in 1980. Venue attended is possibly a bit smaller than most of the other places Waters will visit, but it breeds an enormous sense of intimacy between Waters (and the rest of the band) and the audience. It seems like he is having more fun this time around, without all the stress and arguments of late 70s Floyd. Going cover to cover (wall to wall?), the performers never let up and it is very easy to get suckered in. Waters is an entertainer and wields the machinery with precision (did I mention that the building of the wall and subsequent projection imagery is accurate to a few seconds? Absolutely brilliant use of new technology, and when you realize who they have pictured on the Wall, you get chills down into your shoes. One example: a video of a little girl, she start's clapping and smiling, then goes over into tears as she stands up and runs into the arms of her father walking into the room wearing fatigues. Fucking powerful. I do believe this was during Vera Lynn).

A few moments that stood out to me: the opening sequence, with flags, searchlights, pyro and the famed fighter plane crashing into one side of the Wall; Waters playing Mother while a recording of him from Earl's Court is projected on the screens; Vera Lynn through Comfortably Numb; and obviously the ending as the bricks come tumbling down. I am still fucking wired.

Two shows in Norway April/May. Go get your tickets. Not a suggestion, more of a command.
